Don’t Let the Wolf Distract You (A Tribute to Walter of The Whispers)

The recent passing of Walter Scott from the legendary R&B group The Whispers touched my heart deeply. Their music was the soundtrack of my dancing days so joyful, soulful, smooth, and unforgettable. I am a "Chocolate Girl", and through life’s ups and downs, I remind myself that "Love is Where You Find It“, and "The Beat Goes On” no matter what.

But one song stands out with a deeper meaning: “Olivia (Lost and Turned Out).”

My mind saw a metaphor in this song. Olivia was on her way to her grandmother’s house, a place of wisdom and safety. But a smooth-talking wolf distracted her, changed her ways, turned her out to the streets, and she lost her way.

You may not meet a wolf on the street…but the wolves show up now as:

  • Social media overload

  • People-pleasing

  • Rushing into relationships

  • Shopping or partying to avoid the real work

  • Invitations to go to events that seem like more fun than the goal/task that needs your attention

  • that sense of obligation to other people's requests that makes you say "yes" when your soul and goals are screaming "no"

Distractions are sneaky. They pull you off the path to peace and purpose. The lyrics said, "Break the chain and use your brain." Don’t let the wolf win. Return to your “grandmother’s house”, that sacred space inside you where you feel grounded, wise, and whole. God will always leave the light on for you. Rest in peace, Walter. Your music still ministers.

What’s been distracting you lately? What do you need to return to? Stay focused. Keep the main thing... the MAIN thing.
