One thought stayed with me this week. My adult nephew shared with me wonderful memories of my mother (his Grandmother) that I never witnessed. I was surprised and glad to know there was a personality she had that is celebrated, remembered fondly, and honored but …. also I felt sad because I never experienced as her daughter what he shared.

The people closest to you may not know every version of you.

Some know your courage. Some know your humor. Some know your grief. Some know your faith. Some only know your professional side. Some only remember who you used to be. Some see the teacher. the mentor, the caregiver, the dreamer., the silly one, the spiritual one, the angry one, the tired one, the unstoppable one, the creative one, the enduring, resilient one, the private one, the intense one, the guarded fearful one, the stressed one, the calm one, the introvert, the extrovert, the disciplinarian, the leader, the bitter one, the confused one, the woman who laughs until she cries, the woman who quietly cries alone.

Some of your closest family members may never see the face your friends know so well.

Some friends may never know the depth of your faith. Some coworkers may never see your playful spirit. None of us is one-dimensional. The goal is not to wear only one face.

The goal is to make sure none of those faces are hiding the real you. That does not make you inconsistent. It reminds us that people experience different dimensions of us depending on where they meet us in life. Be grateful for the people who create enough safety for you to become more fully yourself. People don't know all of you. They know the version of you that had room to emerge in the relationship you share. The greatest gift is finding people who make it safe for more of your true self to come into the light. Be sure to schedule your one-on-one time with me to explore, heal, understand, and even remove some masks you learned to wear in survival mode.

Not everyone gets the same version of you because not every relationship creates the same level of safety.
