So much of our suffering does not come from what is happening right now. It comes from what we keep replaying in our minds, and what we keep imagining might happen next. Something could have happened ten days ago or ten years ago, and we can still feel the pain like it pulled up in the driveway this morning with luggage.

And something may not have happened at all, but our mind will already start producing the whole movie. That is what fear does. Memory pulls us back into yesterday. There is no YES in yesterday. Imagination can push us into tomorrow. And before we know it, we are suffering over something that is not even standing in front of us right now.
Scripture reminds us, “God hath not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” 2 Timothy 1:7 Your sound mind matters.
Because fear will have you arguing with people who are not in the room, rehearsing disasters that have not happened, and emotionally packing for a trip God never told you to take.
Are you trying to find your peace? You can only handle what is happening right now. The peace begins when you learn how to separate what you remember, what you imagine, and what is actually happening in this present moment.
Your memory is not the enemy. It can teach you. It can deepen you. It can remind you how far you have come.
Your imagination is not the enemy either. It can help you dream, create, build, and believe again.
But when memory and imagination start running your nervous system, fear takes the wheel. Trust and believe, fear does not have a valid license.
The work is learning how to come back to yourself. Come back to your breath. Come back to your body. Come back to what is real right now. Come back to God. Come back to peace. Because once you learn how to manage your inner world, your past does not have to keep punishing you, and your future does not have to keep frightening you. Your mind can become a tool instead of a tormentor. That is the shift. (intro from SereniTEA Short Stories by Jewel Diamond Taylor)
