“Both Things Can Be True” – Riding Life’s Emotional Rollercoaster Without Falling Apart
Let me tell you something... life is not either/or — it’s both/and. And the sooner you wrap your heart and mind around that truth, the less you’ll feel like you're losing your footing every time the winds shift.
You thank God for all that you’ve come through. You see His hand on your life. You smile, you serve, you show up. But deep inside, there’s still a place that aches…maybe you’re sitting in God’s waiting room waiting for your breakthrough, feeling sad for the mother you lost, the marriage/relationship that shifted, the child you’re still praying over, the body is taking too long to heal, your money is delayed, or the dream that hasn’t come to life yet. You can be content and still desire change. You’re the strong one, and you still need rest.
You’re resilient, and you still need support.
You can be deeply rooted in gratitude and still hungry for expansion. Both can be true.
You can be walking in gratitude and still carry grief. You can sing hallelujah with tears in your eyes. You can count your blessings and still cry over what was lost. You can be a praying man or woman who still feels fear, worry, or doubt. You can stand on the Word and still feel wobbly when life gets unpredictable. This contradiction doesn’t mean you lack faith.
I find it so helpful to remind myself and others whom I coach, that life is full of paradoxes. One minute you're shouting hallelujah because a door finally opened... and the next, you're curled up wondering if you're really ready to walk through it. You can be deeply grateful and still feel completely overwhelmed. You can be strong and still need a moment to fall apart. You can be healing and still feel the sting of the wound.
Let me put it plain: life is messy. It’s not all Instagram-ready. It's real, raw, and sometimes it will knock the wind outta you. But it’s also beautiful, surprising, and full of grace.
We don’t have to fake like we're ok all the time. But we do have to learn how to ride the emotional rollercoaster with some wisdom, some faith, and a whole lot of self-compassion.
So the next time you’re feeling joy and grief in the same breath, or walking confidently while anxiety whispers in your ear... know this: nothing’s wrong with you. You’re just human. And that means you’re capable of holding contradictions without crumbling.
Let life be complex. Let yourself feel it all. Remember the power of your words and thoughts that create your dominant focus. Don’t let the hard days win. Speak life over yourself. Stay grounded in truth. And remember that emotional wellness doesn’t mean you don’t feel pain—it means you know how to walk through it without losing your center.
